Devised in 1994, PAINT is CRV Lagoa animal genetic improvement program designed for beef cattle selection. Its objective is to promote genetic improvement of the participating cattle in a selection for on pasture production.
At present, the program has more than 130 thousand females in control spread in more than 160 herds.
PAINT advantages for the breeder
• Complete genetic evaluation of his cattle;
• Technical and objective selection tool;
• Value added for the CEIP (males and females)
• More efficiency in beef production system.
How does it work?
Every farm that begins working with PAINT starts controlling its cattle through especial software, where all information in the animal cadaster, reproductive life and evaluations are kept.
The products generated each vintage undertake a series of analyses concerning birth, desmame and year or over-year. It is possible to control information such as animal identification, paternity, date of birth, weights, visual conformation scores, precocity, brawniness and navel.
Evaluations are finalized yearly for taurine breeds, or over-yearly for zebuine breeds and all information about participating cattle is used for the animal genetic evaluation.
Doubts about PAINT?
Requirements to participate in PAINT.
PAINT is a program open to new participants. For the enrollment of the property some requirements are important for the genetic evaluation work development:
Herd size:
PAINT recommends a minimum of about 500 bull dams, besides providing the property with the conditions to discard animals without endangering the bull dams replacement and also making the investment costs viable for the program implementation.
Artificial Insemination:
Use of AI is a necessary condition so that the farm can use high genetic valued bulls available in the market and young reproducers in progeny test in the program. Not 100% of the females have to be inseminated, once PAINT also evaluates the monta natural bulls. However, a great deal of the bull dams must be artificially inseminated.
It is important to use the reproductive season, so that the property can get organized, rise its production efficiency and above all concentrate births, letting contemporary groups of animals be formed and evaluated at the proper time.
Zootechnical Data
Data control by the farm is very important both for the production system management and for genetic evaluation. Information about animal and production cadastre, mating control, gestation diagnoses, parturition and weight evaluations, CPMUT (conformation, precocity, muscularity, navel and temperament), scrotal circumference, batch (managing group), place, food, among others, are necessary to make the herd genetic evaluation possible. The zootechnical and quality data are the angular stones in PAINT’s work, since it is the basis of the animal genetic improvement program.
To control the necessary information for the analyses, every farm participating in PAINT uses a especial software and the Data Collection Operational Manual for the PAINT that details the evaluation steps in the property, collection and its managing and entering in the software. CRV Lagoa supplies assistance in the areas of collecting and entering data in the Congado, besides support and technical orientation during the technical visits to the farms. Other items concerning herd management are described in the PAINT Operational Manual.
Involvement:
One of the main points for PAINT on the participating farms is the total commitment of the people involved with the work, from the field employees who handle the cattle and collect information, going to the office personnel who control and enter the herd data into the system , to the technician in charge, manager and proprietor who administer and coordinate farm activities.
PAINT is considered a long chain where each link represents a person. If one of these links breaks, the chain will break loose endangering the whole group.
Qualification:
Property people involved with the work receive procedure manuals, periodic training and technical and assistance from the PAINT crew, so that they can work at their best.
Profile of cattle to participate in the genetic improvement program: At PAINT participating animals do not have to necessarily be registered in associations or have especial documents. At present there are registered as well non registered animals taking part in the program. However, animals must have good racial characterization and no morphological defects, despite the race.
Food used by PAINT partners:
PAINT’s main objective is to promote animal genetic improvement, choosing animals in the main national vocation: breeding cattle on pasture. The company considers it important to concentrate on animals adapted to the actual conditions of cattle raising. Therefore, the aim is to select adapted and extremely productive animals in those regions, meeting the more urgent requirements of local market.
Purposes of a PAINT participant:
The main purpose of a PAINT partner is to improve his bull dams and reproducers genetic quality, aiming at two points: Promote gain of his herd, making his production system more efficient, profitable and extremely competitive in productivity. Through the best genetics available, as well as accurate identification of the productive potential of each animal in the herd, guiding all cattle selective process.
